Discovering Loch Lomond Distillery
Loch Lomond is a malt from the Highlands, a region famous in Scotland for its historical roots in the world of whisky.
The region is known as the home of some of the world's most elegant single malts.
Founded historically in 1814, and established in its current location in 1964, the distillery produced only Malt. Grain distillation was integrated 30 years later, in 1994.
The Loch Lomond distillery has a history dating back to 1772, with the foundation of Littlemill Distillery - the oldest licensed distillery in Scotland.
In 1814, the original site of the Loch Lomond distillery was established near Tarbet at the north-west end of Loch Lomond.
The area has been at the heart of the whisky industry for centuries. Although at least nine distilleries around the Loch have disappeared over the years, Loch Lomond Distillers proudly maintains the local tradition.
In 1985, the Bulloch family bought the distillery after a quiet period.
The stages of making Loch Lomond whiskies
1. Milling
2. Brewing
3. Fermentation
4. Malt distillation
Use of swan neck stills: lower alcohol content and less fruitiness.
Use of Lomond type straight neck stills: up to 85% alcohol, only fruity notes captured.
Some Loch Lomond Single Malts use both types of stills to achieve unique flavour profiles.
Inchmurrin: use of straight neck stills only.
> References to extremely fruity character that may lack balance.
Loch Lomond: a mix of pot stills and straight neck stills
> A much more balanced and complex range.
