Discovering Togouchi Whiskies

 

Founded in 2017, the Sakurao distillery is located in the mountainous region of Hiroshima. The distillery covers an area of over 2225 m² and has a "hybrid" still, as well as a still for grain distillation.

 

Since 2022, Togouchi is 100% produced from the juices of the Sakurao distillery. The Sakurao distillery is one of the only distilleries in Japan to distil grain in its coffey still and malt in pot still. All the whiskies are then aged in the tunnel in the heart of the Hiroshima mountains.

Using carefully selected malts and grains, the master blender begins maturing the distillates in Japan. The whiskies are matured in casks in a unique location, an old railway tunnel 361 metres deep in the heart of Sandankyo Mountain. These ideal ageing conditions lead to a maturation process that gives Togouchi its finesse and purity.

  • A blend of single malts aged between 3 and 9 years, very lightly peated
  • Aged in a combination of Sherry and Bourbon casks

The nose is greedy with aromas of vanilla, chocolate and ripe apricots. The palate is soft with sweet peat and fresh cream flavours. The finish is persistent with a light taste of bitter chocolate and hazelnut.
