What are en primeur wines?
Vin primeur, "Vin nouveau", "Jeune vin" or "vin de l'année" are young wines that must be consumed in the months following their harvest. They are put on sale immediately after the harvest, as soon as fermentation has taken place.
The marketing of the en primeur wines takes place in the same year as their harvest. The Beaujolais Nouveau, the star of the primeur wines, makes its market debut on the third Thursday of November.
The primeur wines can be red wines such as Beaujolais Nouveau, white wines such as 6-week old Rabbit or rosé wines, appellation wines or vins de pays.
Carbonic maceration is the method used by many winegrowers to obtain their primeur wines.
A lively colour like that of Beaujolais Nouveau is acquired thanks to a short maceration of whole bunches of grapes for a maximum of three days.
The red en primeur wines give off an intense fruity nose of small red berries when they are made using the semi-carbonic maceration method.
